Under 18s Student Policy
Each year the University admits a small number of students who are under 18 years of age at the point of entry. From experience most are over 17 years of age and will reach their 18th birthday soon after they enrol at the University. However, the Children Act 1989 states the legal definition of a child as “a person under the age of 18”. Whilst there is no legislation imposing a positive statutory duty on higher education institutions, the University recognises the need for a safeguarding culture for students who are under 18 years of age and the particular importance of ensuring that:
the relevant health and safety requirements are understood and are being met;
the extent of the commitment to safeguarding is clearly established and communicated internally and externally as appropriate;
both collective and individual responsibilities are clearly defined and acted upon;
there is a protection for University staff by ensuring that appropriate systems are in place
