Mae Mike yn Ddarllenydd mewn Ffisioleg Cardiofasgwlaidd ac Amgylcheddol yn Ysgol Gwyddorau Chwaraeon ac Iechyd Caerdydd. Mae ei raglen ymchwil yn archwilio addasu'r gadwyn cludo ocsigen mewn ymateb i ymarfer corff ac ysgogiad amgylcheddol trwy lens ffisioleg integreiddiol. Archwilir y diddordebau ymchwil hyn drwy ddefnyddio ystod eang o dechnegau ymyrraeth uniongyrchol a thechnolegau delweddu arloesol wrth asesu cardiac, serebrovascular, haematolegol a ffisioleg niwrofasgwlaidd.

Canolbwyntiodd ymchwil gynnar Mike ar y llwybrau addasu dargyfeiriol a gymerwyd gan wahanol boblogaethau mewn ymateb i uchder uchel, lle mae'r gadwyn cludo ocsigen o dan bwysau sylweddol gan fod llai o ocsigen ar gael. Trwy ddefnyddio cyfuniad o waith maes labordy ac alldeithiol yn Nepal a Pheriw, llwyddodd Mike a'i dîm i ddatgelu'r ffordd unigryw y mae Sherpa yn rheoleiddio’r elfen yn y gwaed sy’n cludo ocsigen (haemoglobin). Yn nes at adref, mae tîm ymchwil Mike yn datrys y ffordd unigryw y mae'r system gardiofasgwlaidd yn addasu i wahanol fathau o hyfforddiant ymarfer corff. Mae wedi dangos sut me ae dull hyfforddi (e.e. dygnwch yn erbyn gwrthwynebiad) yn newid y ffordd y mae'r galon yn ymateb i'r her sy'n gysylltiedig ag ymarfer corff. Nod y thema hefyd yw nodi cyfleoedd penodol yn y rhychwant bywyd lle mae addasiadau cardiofasgwlaidd yn fwyaf amlwg. Un cyfnod o'r fath yw'r glasoed, lle mae hormonau rhyw a thwf yn cyrraedd uchafbwynt ymhlith bechgyn a merched. Er gwaethaf pedwar degawd o ymchwil, mae tystiolaeth empirig ar gyfer cyfleoedd wedi bod yn anodd mewn modelau dynol. Canfu gwaith labordy Mike, er bod addasu cardiaidd a haematolegol yn bosibl cyn y glasoed, roedd maint y gwahaniaeth rhwng y rhai a oedd yn cymryd rhan mewn hyfforddiant o’i gymharu a’r rhai nad oeddent yn egnïol yn llawer mwy yn dilyn glasoed..

Yn ganolog i'w raglen ymchwil mae datblygu amgylchedd hyfforddi o ansawdd uchel ar gyfer ymchwilwyr ôl-raddedig, gyda ffocws ar hwyluso cyfnewidiadau dwy-gyfeiriadol gyda sefydliadau ymchwil blaenllaw ledled y byd. Datblygodd amgylchedd hyfforddi ar gyfer myfyrwyr ymchwil ôl-raddedig sy'n canolbwyntio nid yn unig ar y gwaith diriaethol, ond sy'n pwysleisio datblygiad sgiliau meddal ar gyfer llwyddiant yn y byd academaidd. Mae Mike yn goruchwylio tîm o gynorthwywyr ymchwil ac ymgeiswyr PhD sy'n archwilio agweddau amrywiol ar y thema ymchwil a amlinellir uchod.
