Rydym yn canolbwyntio ar ymchwilio i bathogenau dynol o darddiad bacteriol, ffwngaidd a firaol gan gynnwys: sut mae pathogenau'n rhyngweithio â'u horganeb letyol, ffyrdd arloesol o nodi a diagnosio haint, a strategaethau rheoli heintiau newydd gan ddefnyddio triniaethau gwrthficrobaidd cyfoes. Mae'r astudiaethau hyn yn cwmpasu pathogenau sy'n effeithio ar amrywiaeth o wahanol systemau organau, ymatebion imiwnedd yn yr organeb letyol, a datblygiad triniaethau gwrthficrobaidd synthetig a naturiol.

Meysydd Ymchwil / Arloesi
Rhyngweithiadau rhwng y Pathogen a’r Organedd Letyol
Mae'r astudiaethau hyn yn defnyddio modelau heintiau in vitro ac in vivo (Galleria mellonella) i ddeall haint clwyfau cronig, heintiau a drosglwyddir yn rhywiol, heintiau'r llwybr anadlol, haint firaol parhaus, a heintiau eraill sy'n berthnasol yn glinigol.
Nod gwaith Rebecca Aicheler yw deall sut mae cytomegalofirws dynol (HCMV) yn modiwleiddio ymateb celloedd y lladdwr naturiol (NK). Mae HCMV yn risg i ffetysau yn y groth ac yn un o brif achosion camffurfiad cynenedigol. Ar hyn o bryd mae Lauren Jones, myfyriwr PhD sy'n gweithio o fewn y grŵp, yn ymchwilio i rôl IL-10 (v-IL-10) wedi'i amgodio gan HCMV mewn cleifion sydd wedi cael trawsblaniad aren.
Mae cytomegalofeirws dynol UL141 yn atal celloedd LLN rhag rhwymo i CD155 ac mae'r gell LLN yn cael ei rhwystro
Mae ymchwil Mike Beeton yn canolbwyntio ar ddeall y rôl y mae mycoplasma ac ureaplasma yn ei chwarae mewn iechyd a chlefydau pobl, gan nodweddu eu mecanweithiau ymwrthedd gwrthfiotig, deall eu rôl mewn genedigaeth cyn-amser a heintiau'r llwybr anadlol.
Ffurfiant bioffilm gan Ureaplasma parvum pan fydd yn cael ei dyfu o dan amodau llif
Mae Sarah Maddocks yn ymchwilio i ryngweithio rhwng pathogenau mewn bioffilmiau wedi’u cyd-feithrin gan ddefnyddio model bioffilm clwyf cronig in vitro. Nod y gwaith hwn yw deall cytrefu gwahaniaethol, ffyrnigrwydd wedi'i newid, a'r effaith y mae'r rhain yn ei gael ar ddatblygiad haint. Mae Sarah hefyd yn astudio rôl bacteria gwahanol mewn cytrefi bach gan gynnwys sut maen nhw'n parhau mewn haint cronig..
Iachau nam ar keratinocytes dynol sy'n agored i Staphylococcus aureus
Gwrthficrobau Newydd
Mae'r ymchwil hon yn ymchwilio i ddulliau naturiol a synthetig i fynd i'r afael â phroblem barhaus ymwrthedd gwrthficrobaidd.
Mae Mike Beeton yn ymchwilio i'r defnydd o bacterioffag sydd wedi'i ynysu o'r amgylchedd i ymdrin â haint a achosir gan bathogenau sy'n berthnasol yn glinigol. Mae'r astudiaethau hyn wedi ehangu i gynnwys dylunio ymyriadau wedi'u targedu yn erbyn mycoplasmau ac ureaplasmau.
Mae ymchwil James Blaxland yn canolbwyntio ar ddefnyddio osôn i ddadheintio'r bacteriwm Listeria monocytogenes o fwyd a’r ardaloedd a ddefnyddir i baratoi bwyd. Gan weithio gyda nifer o wneuthurwyr dyfeisiau osôn, mae James yn nodi dull safonol ar gyfer pennu effeithiolrwydd osôn o fewn ystod o amgylcheddau. Mae James hefyd yn sgrinio ac yn nodweddu ystod o ddeunyddiau naturiol gan gynnwys mêl a hopys i bennu eu potensial gwrthficrobaidd. Mae microbioleg glinigol a microbioleg bwyd yn ddiddordebau ymchwil ganddo.
Nod gwaith Paul Livingstone yw nodi micro-organebau rheibus sydd â photensial biosynthetig sydd heb ei ddihysbyddu hyd yma. Mae micro-organebau o'r fath yn bwyta microbau ysglyfaethus trwy secretu sylweddau gwrthficrobaidd, a gellid eu defnyddio i frwydro yn erbyn nifer o bathogenau sy'n berthnasol yn glinigol.
Mae Sarah Maddocks yn gweithio gyda Mike i ymchwilio i'r defnydd o bacterioffag i darfu ar fio-ffilm polymicrobaidd mewn cyfuniad â gwrthfiotigau systemig, mewn model bioffilm o glwyfi cronig in vitro. Defnyddir y model hwn yn yr un modd i brofi gorchuddion a geliau gwrthficrobaidd lleol newydd.
Testing antimicrobials in an in vitro chronic wound biofilm model.
Genomeg Ficrobaidd a Tacsonomeg
Mae Paul Livingstone yn defnyddio creu dilyniant y genhedlaeth nesaf a dadansoddiad genomig cyfoes i nodi a nodweddu bacteria amgylcheddol sydd â photensial metabolig y gellid ei ddefnyddio i ddiraddio llygryddion. Mae Paul hefyd wedi nodi taxa newydd o ficro-organebau rheibus o wahanol genera ac mae'n ymchwilio i'r sail genomig ar gyfer ysglyfaethu.
Mae Paul hefyd yn gweithio gyda Sarah i ddeall sail genomig ffenoteip amrywiolion cytrefi bach, yn ogystal â dadansoddiad metagenomig o glwyfau â haint cronig.
