Course Content
In the first year (Level 4), you will undertake six compulsory modules, five of these through the medium of Welsh. These modules offer a general introduction to academic studies in the field of sport, focusing on coaching, sport science, physical education and youth sport, and contemporary issues in sport and physical education.
The first-year modules also offer you an opportunity to practise and develop academic skills. You will be introduced to the research process within the field of sport and you will undertake two practical modules of your choice (English medium).
In the second year (Level 5), you will further develop your knowledge and understanding re our three main elements, namely, coaching/teaching, sport science and ethical issues. You will study at least five modules through the medium of Welsh. You will undertake two practical modules of your choosing (English medium).
In the third year (Level 6), you will complete an independent project through the medium of Welsh which focuses on a research subject in a field of your choosing. You will have an opportunity to develop your research, communication and problem-solving skills.
Learning & Teaching
Effective learning, teaching and assessment methods underpin the educational aims and the learning outcomes of all of our courses. Learning and teaching methods may include lectures, seminars, workshops, tutorials and practical sessions. Our Virtual Learning Environment (Moodle) is an integral aspect of the learning package that supports the needs of our students.
Lead lectures introduce key topics and concepts, while seminars, tutorials, workshops and practical sessions focus on the application of key concepts with the aim of enhancing the student experience and engagement. You will also meet tutors on a one-to-one basis. As a School, we endeavour to provide student-centred learning opportunities that deliver a high quality and flexible learning environment.
Learning and teaching methods emphasise and facilitate the development of your critical reasoning and encourage the application of theory to practice. Throughout your programme, you will experience both tutor-led learning and self-directed methods of learning. We encourage you to develop a positive attitude towards lifelong learning.
Our teaching and learning methods embed the Cardiff Met 'EDGE' (Ethical, Digital, Global & Entrepreneurial) skills and you will be well-equipped to demonstrate graduate attributes expected of you in an increasingly competitive world of work. We aim to help you to become reflective professionals and critical scholars.
In your sport programme at Cardiff Met, you will encounter a learning experience from induction to graduation that is coherent and develops your identity within your programme of study.
Specific features of the learning experience on Bilingual Sport and Physical Education Studies include:
- Talented researchers and elite-level coaches who are an integral part of this unique learning environment
- An opportunity to gain Level 1 and 2 coaching qualifications
- Use of excellent facilities that enhance the student experience
- An opportunity to go to Patagonia (Y Wladfa) for three weeks to teach in primary/secondary schools and coach in local sports clubs
- An opportunity to improve your Welsh by studying for the Language Skills Certificate.
Assessment
The programme employs a variety of assessment strategies to give our students the best learning experience.
Through assessment we can evidence that you have met the learning objectives (as articulated by the FHEQ and CQFW).
Assessments support your learning experience by providing opportunities for you to receive formative and summative feedback which tests your knowledge, ability, skill and critical understanding. Undergraduate modules are assessed through a combination of:
- written coursework
- poster presentations
- oral presentations
- portfolios
- seen/unseen exams
- practical skills
- other activities designed to assess, develop and enhance academic and employability skills.
You will be expected to complete a final project as part of your final year on the Honours degree. Final projects may be research, innovation, consultancy or a community project. .
Employability & Careers
The Cardiff Met ‘EDGE’ prepares you to thrive in the modern world. Throughout your degree you will experience a range of opportunities to develop your ethical, digital, global and entrepreneurial competencies through problem-based learning, real-world industry case studies, on-campus work experience and off-campus work placements. We will ensure a wide range of opportunities to develop transferable skills such as communication, teamwork and leadership.
In the first year you will have the opportunity to gain technical qualifications in a range of programme-specific areas including sport coaching, exercise and health and safety. These opportunities will ensure that you have the appropriate qualifications and experience to apply for many of the on-/off-campus work placement opportunities. We will help you to seek opportunities to study/work abroad. Work placements can give you a critical EDGE in gaining professional employment on graduation. AChAG graduates have gained employment in the following fields: media, education, sport and local government. Many of our graduates continue at the University on postgraduate courses (PGCE, Master’s and Doctorate).

Entry Requirements & How to Apply
Applicants should preferably have a strong sporting profile. Applicants should normally have five GCSEs including GCSE English Language (or Welsh First Language) and Maths* at grade C or above (grade 4 or above for applicants holding newly reformed GCSEs in England) plus 112 - 120 from 3 A levels (or equivalent). Typical offers may include:
- A Levels: 112 - 120 points to include grades BB. Welsh Baccalaureate – Advanced Skills Challenge Certificate will be considered as a third subject
- RQF BTEC National Extended Diploma / Cambridge Technical Extended Diploma with DMM
- VTCT Extended Diploma in Sports Studies with DMM overall
- Irish Leaving Certificate: 112 - 120 points from Highers to include 3 x H2 grades within relevant subject (minimum grade considered at Higher is H4)
- Scottish Advanced Highers: 112 - 120 points to include grades CC
- Access to Higher Education Diploma: Pass with 15 credits with Distinction and 30 credits with Merit
*For Welsh applicants sitting the reformed Mathematics GCSE, we will accept either GCSE
Mathematics or
Mathematics – Numeracy.
Applicants are normally made an offer based on the details above. Typical offers will be made within the tariff range detailed above and will be based on the strength of your overall application, including your academic and sporting profile. For applicants who are only undertaking 2 A levels (or equivalent) or are not predicted to meet the standard tariff offer above, applications will be considered based on the strength of the whole academic profile and we may issue a graded offer in lieu of an offer using the UCAS Tariff.

Selection Procedure:
Selection is based on the receipt of a completed UCAS application and attendance to a Sport Applicant Day.
Sport Applicant Days:

Successful applicants are expected to give first priority to the university sports teams throughout their undergraduate careers.
